Ι What Is Metal Injection Molding (MIM)?
Although injection molding is primarily employed to create plastic components, it’s also exceptionally efficient for producing large quantities of intricate metal parts in various industries. Metal injection molding (MIM), a sophisticated metalworking process, involves blending finely-powdered metal with a binder like wax or polypropylene to form a “feedstock,” which is then molded and solidified through injection molding process.
MIM integrates the best attributes of powder metallurgy and plastic injection molding, enabling the production of small, complex-shaped metal components with superior mechanical properties that are challenging to achieve using conventional machining methods. This molding technique facilitates shaping high-volume, complex parts in one streamlined step. Following molding, the green parts undergo debinding to extract the binder, then sintering to densify the powders, ensuring durability. The resulting small components serve numerous industries and applications effectively.
