SmCo Arc Magnet

Samarium Cobalt magnets, also known as SmCo magnets, are a type of rare earth permanent magnet which made of an alloy of Samarium, Cobalt, and Iron. Besides excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosion, SmCo arc magnet has a high Curie temperature and stable temperature stability compared with frequently-used sintered Neodymium magnets. Almost all of SmCo arc magnet are used in high temperature permanent magnet (PM) motors, generators, and magnetic coupling devices owing to its abnormal temperature holding characteristic.

Machining Process of Samarium Cobalt Arc Magnet

As a sintered magnet manufactured by the powder metallurgy method, SmCo magnet exhibit mechanical anisotropy due to the magnetic orientation of the crystal structure during the manufacturing process. Therefore, Samarium Cobalt is qualitatively hard and brittle. The processability of sintered Samarium Cobalt magnet is lower than sintered Neodymium magnet and much more prone to fracture in the machining process, thereby, extreme care must be taken to avoid cracking and chipping these magnets owing to their brittle nature. There are two kinds of Samarium Cobalt magnet, 1:5 and 2:17. SmCo5 series is comparatively easier to machine in comparison with Sm2Co17 series. Machining process of SmCo arc magnet is basically finished by wire-cutting and grinding technology which totally same as Neodymium arc magnet.
